A Message from Superintendent Parker: George Floyd
A message from Allentown School District Superintendent
Amid a nation in chaos, we must choose whether we remain silent or whether we speak power to the words of healing. To heal, we must speak truth to the challenges that plague our nation, our states, and our cities. The killing of unarmed African American men in this nation is not a new phenomenon, nor does it happen in a vacuum. We cannot allow our children to accept this as normal because of its frequency. As we watch the nation struggle with the killing of George Floyd, we reflect on the impact of this incident, its aftermath, and the cultural context that creates the conditions for both. The impact of this period on our children and how they shape their understanding of the world cannot be understated. In the aftermath, we have seen hate, anger, fear, mistrust, and racism on full display across our country.
The Allentown School District Strategic Framework’s first core strategy that we “Cultivate a culture in which students feel safe, valued, and nurtured.” Our very first goal is ensuring students learn in an environment where they are “respected and valued as individuals from many different backgrounds.”
The Allentown School District serves the children of nations from across the world. Our strength is our diversity, and we uphold that diversity as sacred. When one part of our family is hurting, we all hurt. As your Superintendent, and keeper of this vision set forth by our Board of Directors, I hurt right now and know many of our children, our teachers, and our leaders feel the same hurt, anger, and frustration. We are seeking answers and explanations to share with our own children amid tragedy. I know many of our families are doing the same and we support you during this time.
Know that the Allentown School District stands against racism and violence in all of its forms. We are proud of our students and staff who stand up daily and advocate for a nation and an Allentown that values all voices. We hear you. We share your outrage. We are committed to the principles of equity and restorative practices because we know that without system change, we can never have systemic change.
To our students:
Stay Strong.
Stay Focused.
Stay Encouraged.
Breathe.
Be Peaceful and be safe, but never be afraid to express how you feel. Know that we support you.
Thomas Parker
Superintendent, Allentown School District
A nuestros estudiantes:
Mantenerte Fuerte.
Mantente Enfocado.
Mantente Animado.
Respirar.
Thomas Parker
Superintendente, Distrito Escolar de Allentown
