Allentown School District Launches Allentown Youth Intern Corps for Students

ALLENTOWN, PA — The Allentown School District is excited to announce the launch of the Allentown Youth Intern Corps (AYIC) for students ages 14 to 21 and currently enrolled in the Allentown School District or a 2023 Allentown School District graduate. In partnership with the Workforce Investment Board Lehigh Valley, the City of Allentown, and community organizations providing summer programs, the District will collaborate to recruit and engage students in summer employment opportunities in the District and the community. 

The District is designing summer internship employment opportunities for our students to work under the mentorship of District and/or community staff members in various capacities during the summer to gain authentic, real-world career experiences.

“The Allentown School District is thrilled to have developed the Allentown Youth Intern Corps as a way for students to learn, gain valuable work experience and receive mentorship from leaders within our learning community this summer,” said Dr. Carol D. Birks, Allentown School District Superintendent. “When I say ‘We get better together.  All of our strengths are needed,’ this includes maximizing the gifts and strengths of our sensational students who have so much to contribute to the Allentown School District Learning Community.”

The District is looking to employ 100 students across our schools and departments in paid internship opportunities. District employment opportunities in the areas of Project Management, Academic and Enrichment Intern, Custodial / Facilities, and Secretarial/Administrative Support. 

The AYIC experience for summer 2023 begins June 23, 2023 and continues through August. Students will work Mondays through Thursdays, on a schedule not to exceed thirty (30) hours per week. Compensation will be $15.00 per hour. Flexibility will be considered for students who have planned vacations or other work commitments Students must be enrolled in the Allentown School District or a 2023 ASD graduate to be eligible. Working papers and clearances will be required.

The Allentown School District’s Human Resources Department and the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council will support the recruitment of candidates.  The Workforce Investment Board Lehigh Valley will partner with District Staff to ensure students gain insight into the job and career skills the AYIC experiences can provide including resume building, letters of recommendation, references, and translating experiences into interview questions.   The AYIC program will also assist in recruiting candidates for openings within the City of Allentown’s Summer Parks program, pool cashiers, and lifeguards.
