Cleveland and McKinley Building Status

On May 12, the Allentown School District Board of Directors received a report  on a recently completed Structural and Parking Assessment for Cleveland and McKinley Elementary Schools.

The report reveals structural deficiencies and accelerated deterioration, geological instability and insufficient parking. The report also estimates that capital repairs to both buildings would cost an excess of $16 million in order to make the 150 year old buildings safe, warm, dry and minimally compliant. The structural and parking assessment did not include repairs to potentially concealed conditions, surface remediation, improvements to support use changes or acquisition of additional real estate to create required parking.

At this time, the district has not made any decisions regarding the future of these buildings and will continue with due diligence.

A 2016 Physical Condition Assessment concluded both schools have reached or exceeded their useful life and have been closed since March 2020. Cleveland and McKinley were replaced with the new Brigadier General Anna Mae Hays Elementary School, which officially opened its doors in April 2021.
