ASD Students Soar at National History Day Competition

On Saturday, March 24, the regional National History Day competition was held at Muhlenberg College. Twenty-eight (28) students represented the Allentown School District, competing with 20 projects. These projects require extensive research and a high level of task commitment to complete. Students are also invited to display their projects in June at the annual ASD Showcase of Academic Excellence. 

This year’s theme was Conflict and Compromise in History and there were students competing from all over the region for top honors and the invitation to compete at the state level. They will be on display again at our annual ASD Showcase of Academic Excellence in June 2018.

Six of our ASD students, with four amazing projects, earned top honors and the invitation to compete at the state level competition. The state-level NHD competition will be held on May 11-12 at Carlisle HS, Carlisle, PA.

The six students and their four projects that will go on to the state level competition are:

Melody Herrera of Trexler Middle School received second place in the Individual Website (Jr. Division) on the topic of Allan Bakke vs. University of California.  Melody's advisory is Ms. Conchetta Marucci. 

Also from Trexler, Gleish Luciano Espinal, Liberty Williams, and Tynajer Myrick's Group Documentary Jury vs Defendant took second place in the Jr. Division. Their advisory is Ms. Katie Magee.    

Taking top honors in the Indivudal Performance Jr. Division, Elijah Albert-Stein, earned ASD's only first-place finish for his project on The USWA vs Bethlehem Steel:  The Longest Strike in America. Elijah attends Trexler and advisor is also Ms. Conchetta Marucci. 

At the High School level, Jasmine Broderick earned a second place finish in the Individual Documentary (Senior Division) competition presenting Nina Simone: The Compromise for Equality. Her advisor was Ms. Sally Wolfe.
